Design and implementation of an intelligent virtual geographic environment for the simulation of SARS transmission

Abstract: An intelligent virtual geographic environment (IVGE) is a 3D, distributed, and graphical world inhabited by intelligent multi-agents to represent and simulate dynamic phenomena and processes in geographic environments. In this paper an IVGE system is explored to model and simulate the spatiotemporal transmission and control of SARS at a micro level. Using a client-server structure, a prototype system of the distributed and intelligent virtual geographic environment, VirtualGeoLab-SARS, is designed and developed with Java and the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). Some rudimentary experiments are conducted by the VirtualGeoLab-SARS system and show that the simulation is able to give users dynamic processes and 2D/3D spatial distribution of the SARS transmission, and to generate spatiotemporal data through justification of model parameters.
