Abstract: In this paper, we propose an smart phone based interface to control a robot based tele-presence system, called the SPRinT(Smart Phone and Robot for Tele-operation and Tele-presence). It is designed around its mobility and relies on spatial/gestural interaction to achieve the efficiency and tele-presence. The interaction is designed such that the operator "poses" as the robot in the remote area. In navigation mode, the remote interaction space is mapped to the operator space, in-place and first person view based clutching method is used to control the navigation. For other types of tasks, the user will use multimodal interfaces such as motion gesture, touch, voice, and buttons to control the remote view/camera and end-effector, interact with people and explore the environment in the remote site. Preliminary tests have shown promising results in terms of the level of presence felt through the robot and smart phone.
